The name of the game with hummingbird feeders is keeping them clean and filled with fresh nectar. That’s why our favorite feeders are the saucer style ones made by Aspects in Warren, Rhode Island, only 120 miles from The Fat Robin! All of their products also come with a Lifetime Warranty. These “HummZinger” feeders have a vivid red top to attract the hummers, are super easy to clean and also have built in ant moats to stop ants from getting to the nectar. They’re also designed to be bee resistant as the nectar doesn’t drip out and is not easily accessible by anyone but the hummingbirds with their long tongues. Aspects also makes two different window hummingbird feeders, the smaller “Gem” and larger “Jewel Box” with built in any moat.
We also carry some other hummingbird feeder designs from other manufacturers to offer a variety of choices when you’re trying to attract these amazing little birds to your backyard. They typically start appearing here in Connecticut during the 3rd week in April, although some early visitors can start arriving in mid-April. By May 1st larger numbers of hummingbirds begin showing up along with Baltimore Orioles, so you want to have your feeders up by then at the latest! Many only pass through and head further north, but some hang around to nest locally in the state. Late July into September is the best time to attract them after nesting is finished and all of the new young hummers have left the nest.
