About Us

The Fat Robin Wild Bird and Nature Shop is an independently owned and operated family business. We opened in April 1995 and cater to backyard birders and bird feeding enthusiasts as well as advanced birders.

Everyone here at The Fat Robin is knowledgeable about backyard bird feeding and optics and is ready to answer your questions.  (If we don't know the answer, we'll get it for you!)

After being in business for so many years we decided to offer our products and advice to others who might not be so lucky to have a quality bird feeding or nature store nearby. We provide the same advice and service we deliver to our everyday long time customers!

We carry virtually everything related to bird feeding and birding, including:

Gifts (anything and everything related to nature!)
Bird Feeders (Over 100 different feeders)
Bird Baths (including heated)
Bird Seed (no red millet or milo here!)
Bird Houses (both functional and decorative)
Binoculars (Over 50 models in stock)
Spotting Scopes

We offer the expert advice you need to help you choose the product that best suits your needs.

The Fat Robin is independently owned and operated by Jim and Carol Zipp who are also avid birders as well as backyard bird feeding enthusiasts.

Carol has a degree in biology from UCONN.   She has worked in environmental education and also as a naturalist at the Hungerford Center in Kensington, CT.

Ryan our son has been working part time here for almost 12 years and has become quite knowledgable about bird feeding, birds in general and binoculars and spotting scopes as well. He recently graduated Fairfield University.

When Jim isn't in the store he is likely behind his camera photographing birds and everything else in the natural world.  His bird and nature photographs have been published around the world in publications from National Geographic Magazine to Audubon Calendars.

Here are a few samples of Jim's published work.
